OK the idea of starting this build with the jig went out the window.
Instead I decided to attack the cockpit area and although Roden had molded some token detail I thought some work was needed here, as you can see!
I began by removing the molded stringers and filling the sink marks. To replicate the canvas I did try tissue but instead went for the far easier option of masking tape, then sprayed a buff colour over and oil washed with dark sienna. The surface came out pretty well with a texture which could certainly pass in 1/72.
Next came the cockpit floor which has no detail. this in fact was planked as the hull of boat you would expect. I first painted the floor black and preceded to add sprue for stringers followed by very thin card for the planking:-
This was painted desert yellow and oil washed to simulate the wood. I then added the ribbing to the cockpit sides using some brown vinyl strips and this is very thin and shouldn't impede into the cockpit too much.
Eventually I will give everything a light brown spray to blend it and get away from the 5-bar gate appearance, but thats where the build has reached in one nights work.
More soon......
